Have You Seen This Banner?

"Stop Bush" Sign Stolen

A 'Stop Bush' Banner flies on Abbot Kinney.
February 19, 2007, Venice--Yep, it's true, a 20-foot-long banner emblazoned with "Stop Bush" was stolen last night from 1212 Abbot Kinney sometime after 7 pm.

To steal the sign, thieves broke into a private construction site then climbed up to a second story scaffolding. Whether it was done to protect the President, whose last week was abysmal, is unknown.

A local developer had enthusiastically hosted the project with one caveat--"make the sign big."

The banner had been paid for by over 20 Venetians who rapidly laid down contributions ranging from $10 to $50 after President Bush told the country that an escalation of the Iraqi War was vital to United States interests.

While the enormous sign drew the occasional "f*ck you" from passing motorists, the banner garnered overwhelming support from Abbot Kinney denizens. Within the last few days, an anonymous individual had tracked down the developer's real estate broker simply to voice their support.

Venetians and others are encouraged to pass this message along... If you've seen the banner, let us know: letters@venicepaper.net At 20-feet long with 5-feet high lettering, it's kind of hard to miss. As of Monday afternoon, the theft of the sign had not improved Bush's polling numbers.

Is anyone suprised by the theft of the "Stop Bush" banner in light of the deterioration of our 1st amendment rights? Those of us left who still care seem to be asleep at the wheel. Oh for the days of the summer of love. And while we were all drooling in front of the teevee being force fed by the media the latest about Thunder Tits and the bald headed mama (is this REALLY news?) did anyone take note of what the Veep said about the Speaker whilst kicking back in Australia? Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?

My alibi is that on the night in question I was out stealing "No Blood for Oil" and "Bush lied people died" bumper stickers!

My husband and I were very proud to be Venetians when we saw the banner. I had meant to take a photo of it to send to family abroad, to let them know that we Americans were not in favor of the Administration's policy. We are very sorry to hear of its theft . . .
