Residents Protest Freeway Plans
MAY 15 – Over eighty Marina del Rey and Venice residents marched to protest County plans to extend the Marina Freeway so that it connects to a widened Admiralty Way last Saturday morning, May 13. Their signs reading "Public Land for Public Use," "Green Not Greed," and "Boater's Rights," provoked honks of support from passing motorists.
The changes to the Marina Freeway and Admiralty Way are actually two different projects that will be advanced over the next several years.
The County Department of Public Works is presenting three alternate extensions of freeway access across Lincoln Blvd onto Admiralty Way: one by expanding Bali Way, and two others routed just north of Bali Way. The DPW is also offering a "No Action" alternative that would leave 90 Freeway access as it is.
Admiralty Way similarly has alternate proposals for expansion from the present four lanes to either five or six lanes.

The May 13th demonstration was called by the Coalition to Save the Marina, who maintain the projects are not needed. The group fears that expanding roadway capacity will invite intensive commercial and residential development at the expense of public use of the Marina and residents' quality of life.
